NEWMARKET.
The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr, S. Donaldson, presiding. Loan Conversion. —The Mayor reported that loans to the value of £91,894, of a total of £119,744, had so far been converted. Friday was the last day for voluntary conversion. Street Day.—Permission was granted to the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary to hold a street day in the borough on August 3. Levies. —Notification was received that the council's contribution" to the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board for the year was £1028, and to the Auckland Hospital Board, £1707. Conference Representative.—The Mayor was appointed representative of the council at the conference oi local authorities to be held in the Town Hall on June 25, to consider the allocation of heavy traitiu fees. Sunday Pictures.—A letter was received from the Auckland Council of Christian Congregations protesting against the council's policy in permitting ino screening of pictures tor charitable purposes on Sunday nights in "the borough. The council decided to advise the Council of Christian Congregations that while the present economic conditions prevailed the council felt that, as the proceeds from tuts source were used for the relief of distress in the district, it was unable to make any change.
