UNEMPLOYED RELIEF.
COMMiTTEE CONCERNED. NO ANSWER FROM MINISTER. "The delay in receiving a reply from the Minister is exasperating, not only to the committee but also to the unemployed," declared an official statement made this morning on behalf of the subcommittee representing the Mayor's conference which three weeks ago made representations to the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Minister of Employment, regarding unemployment relief in Auckland. The conference was representative of local bodies and social organisations in the Auckland area. The sub-committee appointed by it submitted proposals, which were considered at a further conference, and were later placed before the Minister, who also spent a subsequent evening examining the remedies suggested in consultation with members of the sub-committee. The subcommittee met last evening to consider the Minister's reply, but was informed that none had yet been received bythe Mayor. "We find the position is getting desperate as far as the unemployed are concerned," said a statement made by the sub-committe_c after the meeting. "Many of the unemployed are being placed on sustenance of an amount on which it is impossible for them to live."
