LAWSON PARK.

ONLY APPROVED WORK IN NEW LYNN BOROUGH. CO-OFERATIinE PIiAN OR CAMPS. Unless the work at Lawson Park i«s proceeded with under the co-operative contract system, there will bo no approved work by the Unemployment Board in the New Lynn borough. This decision was conveyed to the town clerk of New Lynn in a letter fro?n Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of unemployment in the Auckland Province, received to-day. It is also pointed out that, failing the co-operative system being put into operation, relief workers, in New Lynn will be able to accept work at the Public Works Department camps, Forestry Department camps, or County Council camps. On Monday eveninT the Xew Lynn Borough Council decided not to proceed with work at Lawson Park on the cooperative contract system, and also decided to make a request to the Unemployment Board that the work be approved under the conditions that previously existed. It was pointed out that as work under >To. 5 scheme in the borough had definitely closed down, the only alternative to accepting work on the co-operative basis was sustenance. The borough had no finances to promote work on behalf of the men.

Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of unemployment in Auckland Province, has now pointed out to the borough council that the allocations for the various works in progress in New Lynn were made on a very liberal basis, and yet the jobs had not been completed for the amounts approved. The continuance of the work at Lawson Park is again suggested, as an amount of £4800 has been approved for the purpose under the No. 5 scheme, co-opera-tive contract conditions. The rates set out are liberal, and apply throughout the work.

The Labour Department announces that there'are. hundreds of vacancies for married men in camps. At the Public Works Department camps the work is on co-operative contract on a basis of 10/ a day; at the Forestry Department camps the pay varies from £1 5/ to £2 a week and found; and at County Council camps from £1 17/6 to £2. 10/ a week, but the men .have to pay for their food.
