MIGRATION.
£10,000,000 SCHEME. AMBITIOUS PROJECT. BRIGHT-TYPE" ENGLISHMEN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Details of an ambitious scheme to increase the Dominion's population with young Englishmen of the right type, and financed with a fund of £10,000,000 to he donated in Britain, were released to-day by Mr. D. V. Bryant, founder of the Waikato Land Settlement Societv. For several months, Mr. Bryant stated, he had been making a special study of the possibilities of a bi« immigration scheme, with a view to relieving the strain on the country's finances and minimising unemployment. I Ho recognised it would be disastrous to attempt to bring people to the country with no capital, and he believed £10,000,000 could be raised in gifts from wealthy Englishmen, onca they were convinced that the scheme would be personally supervised here. There would be no liability on the Dominion in any form, as the new settlers would be financed from money subscribed in England. After settlement, the immigrants would be in debt to the New Zealand organisation to the extent of the value of their properties. Mr. Bryant considered it would be unreasonable to expect the Government to accept responsibility for the scheme, which must be a personal responsibility of individuals constituted as organisations. He emphasised that the essential services of railways, roads, and power systems, as well as New Zealand's . natural resources, were capable of pro- . viding for a considerably larger population. Vast areas of land were waiting to be opened up, besides other areas partially developed, and increased population would mean increased internal consumption of products. It is stated that the scheme has been accorded recognition and encouragement in high quarters and that further steps are being taken with a view to carrying it into effect.
