SUNDAY TENNIS.

ON MOUNT EDEN COURTS. PLAY WITHOUT RESTRICTION. On all courts under , the control of the Mount Eden, Borough Council Sunday tennis will be permitted three weeks hence. This decision, was reached at the meeting of the council last evening following a request from the Mount Eden Club. Mr. J. A. Steele opposed the request. In the request to be allowed to play tennis on Sundays, the Mount Eden Club stated that if permission were "ranted, the club would be able to charge slightly higher fees and thus meet its obligation to the council.

Mr. W. J. Gatenby quoted the Bishop of Waikato, who had stated that there was no offence if a person went to church in the morning and played tennis in the afternoon. "We would be very small-minded if we refused the request, said Mr. Gatenby. Mr J. Walters thought the club Should be allowed to play on Sundays. "Otherwise they will be playing two-up or bowls," he said. Mr. G. W. Clark thought there were better ways of spending Sunday than' in playing tennis, and Mr. Steele tioned that other local bodies did not permit Sunday tennis. "I admit recreation is necessary, but one can obtain just as much from ft jolly good walk as from a game of tennis. i Messrs. Johnston, Buttle, Da.vidson, and Hay were in favour of granting tiie request, but Messrs. Battley and Mills thought the matter should be deferred till there was a full attendance of councillors. as Messrs. Chappell and Cowan were absent last evening. The council decided that play be permitted on Sundays without restriction as to hours. The Mount Eden Club has six courts, there are four at Nicholson Park, and three courts are used o* week days by the Mount Eden Methodist Sunday School.
