RATIONED WORK.

TEACHERS 'ON RELIEF'

POSITION IN AUCKLAND. TOTAL OF OVER 460. Details of school teachers employed in the Auckland Education Board's district under the Education Department's rationing scheme were given to members of the board at its meeting this morning. The secretary, Mr. D. W. Dunlop, said that teachers were employed under the rationing scheme as follows:— (1)In lieu of probationary assistants 133 (2) Relieving teachers (a) at scale rates 30, (b) at rationed rates 57 96 (3)Additional assistants... 220 (-1) Additional assistants at scale rates 3 Total — 461 Mr. Dunlop said that four ex-students of the Training College had declined relieving work on account of the rate of salary payable under the new scheme, that 27 had reported that they were unable to accept relieving work at present owing to either illness or to the fact that they had previously accepted private employment of a temporary _nature, and that !) ex-students were employed as relieving teachers in native schools. The figures quoted, he said, did not include ex-students who were employed in aided schools.

"I think we should make representations to the Department concerning married men who are employed under the rationing scheme," said Mr. S. B. Sims. "Sixty pounds a year is absurd."

The Chairman (Mr. T. «J. Wells): ■What about men who get married, when employed under the rationing scheme I? Mr. Sims: Surely there are some who were married when they were in permanent employment.

Mr. G. E. Spooner said that as a number of rationed teachers gained permanent positions each month,, and thus came off the rationing scheme, it should be possible to use the money thus saved in increasing the pay of those teachers remaining under the rationing scheme. The chairman said that he would be seeing the Director of Education at Wellington on Friday afternoon, and would be pleased to put' Mr. Spooner's suggestion before him. The board decided to supply details of the teachers employed under the rationing scheme at the end of February, as requested by the Department.
