TEACHERS' SALARIES.

NORMAL SCHOOLS STAFFING. FIRE PREVENTION WEEK. Advice that advances for teachers' salaries for the ■ current month. Would be lodged to the credit of the board's account in time to enable payment to be made before the schools, close for the Easter vacation was received by the Auckland Education Board from the Education Department at its meeting this morning. The chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, presided. ■"

With reference to '-{lie-matter 'of"the staffing of - normal schools -during tlio period in which the training colleges are closed, the Department stated thatj although those schools would be; in effect, ordinary public schools, it did not desire to disturb present staffs. In view of the fact, however, - that, as normal schools, they enjoy a much more liberal staffing than ordinary schools of equal grade, it was felt that, in general, if a member of the permanent staff resigned he. should not be replaced so long iis the numerical strength of the staff was at least equal to that to which the school would be entitled as an ordinary school. The Department further stated that if it was necessary to make any appointments to normal schools during the period when the training colleges were closed they should only be relieving appointments.

A copy of a circular on fire prevention, which will appear in the Education "Gazette" for April, was received. The Department stated that the circular had been approved the United Fire Brigades Association, and that during the week April 16-21 fire brigades throughout the Dominion would give '-public demonstrations of fire prevention, similar to those given in November, 1931. The association, stated the Department, would probably make application to the board for permission to demonstrate methods and apparatus in the schools, and it was hoped that the board would favour tlie demonstrations.

Regarding the board's applications for the establishment of a manual training centre at Waiuku, tho Department advised that it regretted that no funds were available for the purpose.

Air. J. Patterson protested that the Otahuhu school appeared to get all that it asked for, while the applications in regard to the schools at Waiuku, Opotiki and Te Puke were declined. "It is not fair," hesaid. The chairman said that if he could do anything in the matter during his visit to Wellington he would do so.
