CHANGE OF NAME?
NEWMARKET SCHOOL. ATTENDANCE FALLS OFF. It is possible that the name of the Newmarket school in Gillies Avenue may shortly be changed. At this morning's meeting of the Auckland Education Board a letter from tho local committee- expressed concern at the depleted roll number of the whool, and suggested that the school should in future be known as the Gillies Avenue School. The committee asked for the board's views on the matter. "I think we should support this request," said Mr. A. Burns. "The present school is really condemned by the old dungeon of a school which it replaced. It is not in the Newmarket 'borough, but in the area controlled by the City Council. It is a fine _ school with excellent grounds, and I think we should support the committee. Owing to the memories of the old school children are being sent to other schools outside the district." The chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, said that apparently the committee thought there was some drawback against the name Newmarket. "I don't know what the Mayer of Newmarket will say, but I suppose we should take the view of the committee."
*jd was decided to ask tlio committee to-give full consideration to the matter at the annual meeting.
