INSPECTOR'S POWERS. 'QUAKE RECONSTRUCTION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PAHIATUA, this day. The Napier building inspector, appointed by the local borough council to control earthquake reconstruction and inspect all plans and specifications, has been given sole power to decide what shall be done. It is stated that it is probable that, an Order-iri-Council will be made to enable the boroughs of Dannevirke and Pahiatua to enforce reconstruction _in accordance with, earthquake-resisting principles.

The latest survey of the damage shows that 033 chimneys _ in . the borough are in need of repair. Tinsmiths and bricklayers are being kept bus}'. The debris and wreckage in the main street is rapidly vanishing.

A communication from the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, states that residents who are in a position to repair damage themselves, or who can obtain finance for the purpose, are expected to do so.
