OTTAWA'S BENEFITS IN INDIA.
British trade with India has benefited substantially as -a. result of the Ottawa agreement, according to a survey of the six months from April 1 to September 30, published by the Department of Overseas Trade. The figures show that; although India's total , imports were , reduced from Rs.7l,crores to R5.55% crores, the United Kingdom's share rose from 35.7 per cent to 41.1 per cent. British exporters improved their trade in almost every item in which there is a preference. "The statistics clearly show," the survey states, "that the Ottawa preferences, coupled in some cases with an exchange advantage, are resulting in the gradual displacement of Continental and American goods by the British product." It is added, however, that Japanese competition is still most severe, and is increasing at au alarming rate in woollen piece goods and many other items in which, owing to the wide disparity between British and Japanese prices, a 10 per cent margin of preference is quite inadeqi*itc.
