SCHOOLBOY KILLED.
PLAYMATE INJURED. BURIED UNDER SANDSTONE VICTIM AN AU C KJLANTHER. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DARGAVTLLE, this day. One boy was killed and another injured as a result' of the collapse of a cutting at Maitaihi yesterday. The boy who lost his life was Frank Flanagan, aged eight years, the son of Mr. Charles Flanagan, of 2, Maxwell Avenue, Grey Lynn, Auckland. He was a pupil at the Grey Lynn School and an only son. The two boys, Ivan Milburn (11), the son of Mr. H. G. Milburn, of 54, Sea View Road, Remuera, and Frank Flana- | gan, were staying with their uncle, Mr. A. I. McGuire, manager of the tung oil plantation at Maitaihi. They were playing yesterday on the road formation works near the plantation, when a portion of a 14ft sandstone bank fell away and completely buried both lads. Two men, Messrs. Arthur G. Thornton and Harry Wilkinson, who were engaged on work nearby, and four others rushed to the rescue and succeeded in extricating Flanagan, who had apparently been killed instantly. _ Milburn was extricated a few minutes later. He appeared to be seriously injured and was rushed to the Te Kopuru Hospital, where it was found that he was not so seriously injured as thought. He is now progressing favourably. The bank which collapsed had been standing for fully 12 months. It was well propped up and appeared quite safe. The sudden collapse is unaccountable. Mrs. Flanagan was also on holiday at Maitaihi at the time of the accident.
