TOWN WATER SUPPLY

POSITION AT TAURANGA. £31,000 SCHEME FAVOURED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TAURANGA, this day. The Tauranga, Borough. Council recently appointed a special committee to consider the matter of improving the water supply. The Mayor, Mr. A. F. Tunks, at a meeting of the council last night, submitted' a report from the committee, together with a detailed report by Mr. C. W. Boak, the borough engineer. The engineer's report stated that the main now supplying the borough was installed in 1910 when the population was 1300, and cost £13,200. The full useful capacity of the main for ordinary domestic purposes, he said, was reached eight years ago. For the past four years the supply at peak periods had been maintained only by the use of booster pumps. Investigations showed that the present source of the supply on the Waiorohi River was the best available. The committee recommended the installation of a new 12in main, at an estimated cost of £21,400. The council resolved to proceed with the scheme by applying for the sanction of the Locul Government Loans Board. The counsel also resolved to approach the Unemployment Board to ascertain what subsidy it was prepared to grant. The engineer was also instructed to place before the Underwriters' Association the matter of the reclassification of fire risks.
