FOUR CYCLES STOLEN.

DISMANTLED AND SOLD. YOUNG MAN SENTENCED. Appearing for sentence in the Police Court this morning on charges of stealing a shirt, worth 5/, gold watch and silver chain, two medals and two keys, of a total value of £5, Lindsay Garfield Rhind, aged 19, labourer, found that there were four additional charges of stealing cycles, valued at £2 10/, £8, £8 and £3 preferred against him. Represented by Mr. F. W. Schramm, Rhind pleaded guilty to all charges. Detective Mahood said he interviewed accused in prison on January 5, when he admitted stealing the four cycles, dismantling them and selling the parts to dealers. His reason was that he was out of work and needed money. According to Detective - Sergeant McHugh the restitution involved was £13 10/. Rhind was on probation when the offences were committed. Mr. Schramm said it was difficult to' say anything in extenuation, but Rhind was yet only a youth, and counsel asked that the sentence imposed be as lenient as possible. The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, recommended that Rhind should be sent to the Waikeria Borstal. He had been an unsatisfactory probationer. Rhind was ordered to be detained in Waikeria Borstal for two years.
