"WITH THE AMATEURS. MANUKAU CLUB. FIXTURES. Saturday, January 13.—Auckland Club Sports. Wednesday, January 17.—Mnnukau Club's .Meeting, Western Springs, 8 n.in. No competitions were held locally during the pust week owing to inclement weather. With three wceke of inactivity riders are now getting back to serious training, and keen competition should characterise the Manukau Club's electric light meeting at the Western Springs Stadium, to-morrow week. Henry Dwigbt, in an interview, did not consider his six wins during the holiday season of much consequence, as he had little serious opposition. But those who witnessed his success at the Whatawhata meeting consider he is riding quite well enough to be able to show to advantage in the club's championships. Last season he won the sprint and five-mile titles, but this season he may expect to be challenged by his brother Les, Mai Byrnes and Ron Foubister, all of whom are in form. Mai. Byrnes has been down Hawke's Bay way, and when last heard from had scored four wins. Byrnes is keen to reduce his record figures for the unpaced kilometre, and may concentrate on this distance for the club championships. He won the Auckland provincial sprint and unpaced titles last season, as well us all three grass track championships. Sinco his entry into the sport in 1924 he has been a first flighted and a proved champion. All cyclists will be pleased to learn that a small trophy will be given to all heat winners in the handicap events, which will be conducted at the championship carnival on the 17th instant. The Manukau dub is the only club to have put this idea in action, and in recent years the , innovation has been the means of making the heats almost as keenly contested ae the finals. The five-mile championship event carries a prize to the leader over the line at the end of each lap of the 16 laps. This idea always makes a distance race a fast and strenuous affair, and prevents any of that slow bunched riding which annoys most crowds. This Wednesday, January 10, the club will hold the annual five-mile race for the House Cup, which, was won by H. R. Dwight from, scratch last season. The scratch men will find harder opposition this season, and team work on the part of the middle markers should give them a chance of figuring in the placings. The limit men are in receipt of 480 yds on the big oval at Western Springs of 513 yards to the lap. The result of the event should indicate how ridere may fare in the fivemile club championship the following Wednesday. ' A big party journeyed to Muriwai last Sunday, but chose a boisterous day for the outing. However, the 24 appeared to, have enjoyed the trip, and another excursion may be held this month. Entries are coming in fast for the championship carnival, and a record list should result. The running events will be conducted by officials of the Technical . Old Boys' Amateur Athletic club, who have offered their full support. The meet will be the first electric light carnival of the season, and as several slight improvements have been made by the " City Council to the grounds and lighting good sport is anticipated. . LYNNDALE AMATEURS. FIXTURES. Saturday, January 13. —kynnaale Carnival. Saturday, January 20.—5 th Points Meeting.
