TAKAPUNA AND RICHMOND. OUTBOAEDS AT PANMUEE DONATION TO REGATTA FUNDS. (By SPEEDWELL.) For the past five years an old Auckland boy, resident of San Francisco, has sent over a donation of £20 to the funds <af the Anniversary Kegatta. This year, in addition to his generous donation, he has forwarded to Mr. J. C. Hewson the sum of £50, to be expended for a cup as a memorial to his late father, Captain S. R. Savory, who wae well known to the older seafaring men of this city. The details of his gift will not be decided until after the arrival of the donor, who is due on January 26, three days before Regatta Day. Mr. Savory has come down from San Francisco for every second year for the past six years, just to renew old acquaintances, and to see the regatta, which has always been one of his most cherished memories of his home port, ever eiuce he ran away to sea when quite a young man. A letter received three weeks ago by a former teacher of young Savory, when a pupil of the Parnell School, also stated that he intended to donate a cup for competi tion on Regatta Day. The recipient o this letter had been regularly sending Mr. Savory the yachting notes appearing in this column each week, and he also expressed his interest in the. notes on the older yachts and trading boats, of many of which he was intimate with their owners and crews. The thanks of boating men are due to Mr. Savory for his generous treatment of Auckland's olding sporting fixture, carried on regularly for the past 86 years. Captain S. R. Savory had command of a number of echoonera and larger craft which traded to the Islands and overseas, and he was also master of the barque Leading Wind after she had been on fire at Firth's wharf, about 1890, when she had to be towed out and scuttled. Prior to this the late Captain Savory was in charge of the s.s. Herald, which traded on the coast in 1886-87, but he is remembered best by old-time eailormen for his long connection with trading to the South Sea Islands. His eon left the sea and settled down as a real estate agent in San Francisco. He has prospered, and delights to see his birthplace occasionally, choosing Regatta Day for his visit, which he commemorates in such a practical manner. TAKAFITNA CXXTB. REGATTA OFF BAYSWATER.
