DOMINION BOWLERS.

j - CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY. CARSWJBLL SINGLES FINALIST. M. WALKER IN" EXCITING PAIRS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. The championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued to-day -with play in both the pairs and singles competitions. There was no pace in the greens, showers falling in the early morning. Fortunately, though the weather was threatening throughout the day, there was no interference with the programme. The fifth round of games was played in the pairs competition and in many cases sections were won outright, enabling several green winners to be found in the morning. In cases where section ties were necessary the green winners were found in the afternoon. A further round of play between green winners was then completed. In the singles in which the players liad been reduced to five on Tuesday, Carswell (Taieri) qualified for the final by defeating E. Harrawa.v (Dunedin) and J. Martin (Sumner). On the Dunedin green he staged a remarkable recovery to eliminate Martin by one point. Great Scoring Contest. In the fifth round of the pairs there was another remarkable game between Efford (Edgeware), who won his section, nnd Wilson (Balmacewen). No fewer than r>3 points were scored in the game, which Efford won by 38 points to 25. On one head Efford secured the possible of six. Somes of the games in which green winners were decided were productive of interesting play. Tamblyn (St. Kilda) beat Gilbert (Karori) by IS points to 15 after the scores had been 12 —S against him on the twelfth head, and Maxwell Walker (Auckland) won an exciting game against Efford by scoring three on the last head when the scores were 16—14 against him. COMMENT OK THE PIAT.

(By TRUNDLER.)

EXCELLENT PROGRESS MADE.

Anticipations of yesterday were realised, S» ts JSrsa afff<£ S before entering on the round where the 7 beat O'Sullivan and Tamblyn. A™ l » E. Tamblyn, who won the pairs chain pionship with \V. R. Todd in 1926 He is a member of the Dominion Council. Carlton members will be glad to notice that their former member, Geoige fe*™'also succeeded in winning his game m the first round against Smith and Rev. Bandy (Papanuf) Thomson (Phoenix, Oamaru) is D. H. Thomson, a brother of the late Mr. J. M. Thomson (Carlton). He has onlv recently gone to Oamaru, having been known for his numerous victories at Invercargill, and still earner at New Plymouth. :- There is an omission of one game in trrwn winner of section A and. Al, eitner and the green winner of I and 11, either Huntley or another be understood that to get into the post-section play "corded telerrrnm pverv tiair had. to-win a maicn, whkh is not rSorded in the telegram but readers can follow what- happened by £ti7the an original section winners mentioned, and then seeing who played ™_ the first round. For instance, .in sections B and 81. Stevenson and Lewis first had to play off to find the section the winner (Stevenson) then played off Gardiner (who had won a 8"™ tie with Mullenger and .Wilson). We inow that Gardiner must have won, to ficure in the first round, but no detaUs of these 14 matches are given.

As anticipated, the committee gave byes to two pairs, in order to reduce the 14 to eight, and these eight will play on the; sudden death-principle as soon ns they are free from the rinks. In fact, the byrs have played their match already, Oardiner defeating Dowland, so there are only seven left. H. Gardiner will be remembered as Deare's No. 3 when they ■ won in Auckland three years ago, nnd lie is playing in the same position in the rinks to-day. He is evidently in good form, for he beat Dowlaud, who lived until the seventh round in the singles on Tuesday. The committee was lucky in finding some of the competitors in the singles free to continue, thus reducing the five to three, but there is no explanation : of how they came To give three byes in the automatic draw. Section play in the rinks will now monopoliee attention, the Auckland skips being Parsons, Walker and Muston. It will take four days, two rounds each day, and post-section play will commence next Wednesday. _ There is also a Tauranga rink ■ playing, in charge of J. Mantell, formerly of Carlton and West End. STANLEY CLUB. First year players at Wniteinuta.—Tackson, ilair, Mason, printer, Walters, Webster, E. A. Jones, Woolfe. • • Inter-club v. Carlton.—Stanley teams will be selected on the ground. The Stanley Club will make its annual visit to Coromandel on Saturday, February 3.
