"A WOMAN OF WORTH."

A JEWISH CONTEST. The first winner of a scholarship to be awarded to a Jewish "woman of worth is Miss Marie Polinsky, of Manchester. Two Manchester Jews, Mr. I. bunlignt and Mr. Gcor<re Rose, are responsible for the Eshet Hayil eclieme, winch takes its name from the Palestine phrase "eshet hayil" —a woman of worth. Mr. Sunlight first thought of recognisiii"' by some means the girl who had devoted most of her time to Jewish culture and learning, and his friend, Mr. George Rose, thereupon endowed a scholarship, to be awarded to euch a girl, allowing her to travel for a month m Palestine. It was their idea also to connect the scholarship with the Chanucan festival, and the first winner was installed at the celebration of, this festival on December 17. Mr. Sunlight had been struck by tne fact that while "beauty queens" were beinf crowned no encouragement was oiven to "a woman of worth" in the broadest eenec. He has therefore set to music the well-known passage from Proverbs bginning, "Who can find a woman of worth? For her price is far above rubies." Copies of the music were distributed to Jewish societies, who joined in rendering the song on the occasion of the festival.
