STUDIO FOR IYA.

TENDERS BEING CALLED.

MODERN BUILDING DESIGN.

Tenders, to close on January 15, have been called for the erection of a studio and office premises at the top of Shortland Street, near Emily Place, for IYA broadcasting station. The architects are Messrs. Norman Wade and A. M. Bartley. It is anticipated that the building will take eight months to complete. It will be in reinforced brick with concrete floors, two storeys in front and four at the back owing to the sloping nature of the section. There will be no windows in the top storey, which will constitute the studio floor, thus making the building somewhat of an architectural novelty. _ The reason for the windowless floor is to obviate the reception of noise. Artificial ventilation and lighting will be installed. The structure will be modern in every phase, and distinguished by vertical lines and brick arcading. The roof will be flat and the entrance will be in the centre of the building, which will have a frontage of ll6ft to Shortland Street. The top floors will be each 110 ft by 83ft, and the lower floors 110 ft by 50ft. The main studio will extend' the height of the two top floors. There will : be two music studios on the top floor, two small talks studios, an announcer's room, and control and echo rooms. Much attention has been paid to the acoustic qualities of the studios, the walls and ceilings of which will be specially treated. The second floor down will contain the director's offices and those of the programme organiser and 6taff, record-testing room and a library, and relay equipment rooms. The third floor down will contain the caretaker's quarters and space for additional studios. The heating and ventilating plants will be on the ground floor.
