EQUIPOISE RACE. Owner Cancels Proposals for Contest With Winooka. NO REASON GIVEN. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 2 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 24. The Australian Press Association is informed that Mr. CJ. V. Whitney, owner of Equipoise, has definitely cancelled all proposals in connection with the Winooka-Equipoise race. It is intimated that after the weight and distance were agreed to, the West Chester Racing Association decided to offer a prize of 5000 dollars, which, in view of the fact that the United Hunts is only a modest meeting, principally of a social nature, was considered adequate. The Australian Press Association learns, moreover, that as Mr. Whitney is the principal stockholder in the West Chester Association, he would virtually provide the prize in question. It is now indicated that the Winooka management felt a 25,000 dollars purse, derived from gate receipts, should be offered at the United Hunts' meeting. It is felt this is beyond its means. It is understood, however, that Mr. Whitney offered to cover any side bet the Winooka management wished to make, but this latter is believed to have been declined on the ground that wagers at attractive odds would be available outside.
