PANIC FOLLOWS.
FAKED BATTLE BROADCAST. CHICAGO, October 5. When 10 long-term convicts escaped from Indiana State penitentiary on Wednesday, the police started a manhunt extending through the night among farmhouses in rural areas. A radio news announcer accompanied them, and, with the aid of men firing guns, is alleged to have broadcast a faked story of a battle between police and convicts, which was broadcast throughout the nation.
Meanwhile, terror-stricken residents, hearing the broadcast and fearing for their lives, jammed the telephone service summoning police protection. The head of the State police denounces the fake. A high broadcasting executive and announcer have been dismissed, and the Federal Radio Commission is investigating.
