SHOPS CLOSED IN HUNTLY.

WIDESPREAD REGRET.

The body, after being embalmed at Hamilton last night, was taken to the Waahi pa, at the special request of the Maoris as his death had taken place while he was attending the tangi. The pall bearers at Hamilton were the Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, and the following supporters of the Labour party:— Messrs. F. Sutherland, W. Lee-Martin, J. H. Terry, W. Hayes and H. Beebe. As a mark of respect, the shops in Huntly were closed for three hours this afternoon, while the body lay in state at Waahi Pa. There was a large gathering of natives|, and Europeans were admitted. When the casket is taken to the Huntly railway station to-night, it will be followed large procession of residents and visitors.

All sections of the community to-day were unifed in their expressions of regret and their assurances of sympathy with the relatives of the late Labour leader.

Prior to the commencement of ordinary business at to-day's weekly lunch meeting of the Auckland Rotary Club the president, Rotarian Syd. ■ Harbutt, made feeling reference to the loss the Dominion had sustained in the death of Mr. Holland. At his request members stood for a few moments in silence as. a mark of respect and sympathy..

Watersiders' Sympathy. Feeling reference to the death of the Labour party leader was made at this morning's call for labour on the waterfront. The president of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union, Mr. W. J. Pauling, paid a tribute to Mr. Holland's ability and straight dealing. As a mark of respect the men stood bareheaded for several minutes, while a motion of condolence with Mr. Holland's family was passed.

Members of a meeting of the Conciliation Council this morning, presided over by Sir. P. Hally, stood in silence for a minute as a mark of respect. Mr. Hally said it was fitting and proper that the meeting should pay a tribute to the memory of the late Leader of the Opposition.

The Wellington Stock Exchange today carried a motion of ■ regret and decided to send a letter of condolence to the relatives. . . .
