Grafton Win

Otahuhu Beaten by 24 Points to 15. Although Otahuhu made a game effort in the second half they were beaten by Grafton at the Showgrounds by 24 points to 15. The teams were:— Otahuhu: Mason, Trevena, Boloshi, Gladding, White, Hill, Arnold, Grace, Clark, Thompson, Bellingham, Bevington, Heath, Evans, Jones. Grafton : Paton, Halls, Stuart, Currey, N. Fraser, Moore, Wilkes, Bunting, Crump, Shadbolt, Finlayson, Mills, Davis, Hardy, W. Fraser. Within two minutes of the start Otahuhu set up a hot attack and the veteran Arnold, playing behind tho scrum, secured near the line and dodged over. The kick missed. Grafton lost no time in driving the reds back to their twenty-live and after a scramble X. Fraser got through for an unconverted try. It was not before Grafton gained the lead, Taton putting over a penalty goal from just inside halfway. Grafton G, Otahuhu 3.

N. Fraser and Stuart showed up well at Grafton's next attack, but the black and whites had to fall back to defence when Arnold made a line solo rim. Play was generally ragged, although the game moved, up and down tho hard ground quickly enough, each ,side forcing in quick succession. Grafton Increased their lead when Crump broke away and passed to Finlayson, who scored. Paton missed. A burst down the sideline gave Halls a try, which Paton converted, and immediately afterwards a break by the Fraser brothers made the way easy for a try by Stuart, Paton again converting. Near the end of the spell Gladding scored an unconverted try for Otahuhu, making the half-time score: Grafton 19 Otahuhu 6 A hot attack by Otahuhu, with baelcs and forwards throwing the ball about smartly, made play exciting at the start of the second half, and the red and blacks' efforts were rewarded when Arnold dashed from the serum and Jones carried on to got an unconverted try. Arnold came into the picture again with another fine run, and when he had only Paton to beat he passed to Heath, who scored. Tho kick missed. Grafton 19, Otahuhu 12. With their advantage threatened Grafton played up vigorously, but without result, and it was Otahuhu who got the next points, Gladding taking a short pass to throw himself over at the corner. Grace missed. Grafton 19, Otahuhu 15. There was excitement when Gladding crossed again for Otahuhu, but he went over the dead ball line and a great chance was lost. Grafton then rallied and Finlayson broke away to give Currey a try, which Paton conrvrted, and the game ended :— Grafton 24 Otahuhu 15 Mr. Paul was referee.
