PREPARATIONS FOR LABOUR DAY.

Although the official racing season does not commence until about November 18, the unofficial opening for the past three or four seasons has been on the Saturday prior to Labour Day, when quite a number of yachts and motor boata will make their first run of the season. The motor division ia fairly well ahead with the work of fitting out, and the next two week-ends will, if fine, show a marked difference in the condition of the" big fleet of sailing craft now safely housed on our beaches all round the harbour. So far the weather at the week-ends has been fairly good, and in many cases work has gone oil well. Even the laggards are now awake to the close proximity of the season's opening, and are making up for lost time. ,

The largest gathering of boats is at Lowe's yard, the next best at the Devonport Club's slit), and third at Judge's Bay. Each of these centres is a hive of industry, and more boats than usual will certainly be seen afloat this season, notwithstanding the times. Especially is this true of the small classes. New boats for the V, S and Y classes have been building all winter, and at least 20 will make thoir first appearance before the official opening day, and many of them some weeks earlier. The number of new keel yachts is also a feature of the season, and all trades connected with the sport report a gratifying increase in business.
