HUNDRED-MILE ROUTE. Papakura-Ngaruawahia —Crokcr Comes to Grief. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PAPAKURA, this day. The first 100-mile amateur cycle race held :n the Auckland district from Kirk's Bush, Papakura, to Xgaruawahia and return, started this morning in bright sunshine and with a fairly strong wind behind. The course will test the ability of riders, as it is partly in loose metal, and the Bombay Hills both ways will try the men out, especially as a majority of the riders areyoung, with experience only of 40-mile races so far. The scene at the bush was made picturesque by riders i;i many coloured jerseys surrounded by a crowd, and also on the cycles were many contraptions for feeding en route. All machines' were thoroughly inspected by an expert, Air. _K. Price, before permission to start was given. Other officials were Messrs. H. C. Webster (starter) and E. King and L- Wilson (timekeepers). The Waikato amateurs are checking at Xgaruawahia. The limit man, Laurence, got away- to time, followed by others in bunches till the scratch men left at 10.20. Oroker, whose chance? were fancied, came to grief a hundred yards from the start. Leaving the concrete, he crashed in loose metal and cut his head, buckled his machine and had to retire, being attended j by the St. John Ambulance.
