CRAYFISH DEMAND.

LOCAL INDUSTRY'S POSITION.

STATEMENT BY COMPANY. Commenting on an article published in the "Star"' on Saturday concerning tho crayfish industry, the. secretary of the. Zealandia Packing Company stated this morning that most of the advice in the article did not afi'ect his company. The report regarding the position on the London market was aimed at exports from other countries, as his company's sample shipment would not arrive there until this week. "It must not be thought," said Mr. Rigg, "that because one company has stopped packing we also are taking no .supplies from tho fishermen. There are nine tons of Mercury Bay crayfish gojng to our Whangaroa factory to-day, and the industry is being organised all along the East Coast from Whitianga northwards, including <he Barrier. Larger supplies are required to meet tho company's orders. At present we have more than we can do to cater for the local market." His company were able to supply the market at a rate that allowed a reasonable margin. Their agent in Australia had assured the New Zealand company that a shipment of 5000 cases could be easily placed. Inquiries had also been received from Singapore and Shanghai. The London report liact aTso stated that glass containers were unsuitable, but that assumption was apparently based oji the question' of cost. There could be no doubt that chemically tho glass container was the most suitable means of packing.
