OPIUM ADDICT FINED.
POUCE RAID AT OTAHUHXT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) OTAHUHU, this day. For being in possession of prepared opium, Joo Chew was lined £25 l)y Mr. F. IT. Lcvien, S.M., at the Otaliuhu Court tliis morning. Sergeant J. Call ill said that at 9.20 last Friday evening Constables Nicliol and Archibald visited Hoe Lee's market gardens in Water Street, Otaliuhu. Defendant was employed bv Iloe Lee and lived in a cubicle in one of the sheds. The constables saw defendant standing at the door of the cubicle, and when tliey went in there was a strong smell of opium. A lamp was burning on the table, and after a. search the constables found a pipe and a quantity op prepared opium. The barking of a dog had warned the Chinese of the policemen's visit, and he liad made an effort to destroy the evidence. Ha had been living in Otahuhu for only two or three months, and, according to his own story, had been before the Court before for opium smoking. Defendant, through an interpreter, pleaded guilty and admitted being a confirmed addict. On the interpreter being responsible for accused, 14 days [were allowed to pay.
