STEAMERS HELD UP.
LYTTELTON DISPUTE.
CHECKING RAILWAY TRUCKS
PERMANENT HAND ENGAGED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. As the result of a dispute over the employment of a permanent man instead of a casual hand on the work of checking trucks, the steamer Gale, which was to have sailed at noon for northern ports, and the- Awahou, which was timed to sail this afternoon for East Coast ports, are lying idle at Lyttelton.
Watersidcrs who were engaged on the vessels left for their homes after protesting against the Railway Department's action.
Tho steamer Gale, belongs to the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company and is engaged in carrying cargo for Blenheim, Seddon and Ward. She is a vessel of 007 gross tonnage. The. motor vessel Awahou runs under tho direction of Kinsey and Co., Ltd., and was to have left to-day for Waikokopu, Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Hicks Bay. Her gross tonnage is 410.
