UNITY NEEDED.
AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE Co-ordination of Three Services Urged. NAVY NOT "OUT-OP-DATE." (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Brigadier'-General Lloyd, at the accountants' luncheon, urged the immediate formation of a War Council to co-ordinate Australian defence. A navy took a long time to build, and it must not be a plaything of politics. The Air Force was the eyes of both the Navy and the Army, and a tremendous power in bombing strength should bo supported to the fullest possible extent. According to a London cable message, when replying to criticism of the Australian Navy by a senior officer at Sydney, the naval correspondent of the "Morning Post" said that the cruisers Australia and Canberra cannot be described either as "out-of-date" or "miserable." Tliero was no use, however, in blinking the fact that the present Australian Navy is of little use for the defence of a vast continent. The only effective defence would be minefields and oceangoing submarines, enabling a strong and distant patrol to be maintained. Both arms would require the support of surface ships.
