ROTORUA GOLF TOURNEY

—• ] HAROLD LUSK LEADS THE \ WAY. M. CARR AND GOTTDIE TIE. WILSON AND PATEESON TOP CUP. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") ROTORUA, Tuesday. Although his play in the second qualifying round of the Rotorua annual golf championship to-day lacked the brilliancy of his morning performance, Harold Lusk's 79 was good enough, with his first effort of 68, to give him the best aggregate. With a total of 147 he was five strokes ahead of his nearest opponents. With few exceptions the 32 players who qualified for the championship failed to reproduce their morning form, the outstanding achievement being that of the Titirangi player, Tom Goudie, whose 73 was four strokes better than the next best (W. Kusabs). Goudie paved the way for a good score with a "birdie" two at the second hole, and a three at the next. Hia only lapse on the outward journey was a five at the short sixth hole (bogey 3). He was out in 38. On the homeward journey his card just bristled with threes, there being no less than five for the nine holes. He got the orthodox figures—three—at the short holes (13, 14 and 17), but obtained "birdies" at the longer twelfth and sixteenth holes. As in the case of Lusk in the morning, Goudie won the afternoon trophies for both the best stroke and net scores, and this no doubt compensated him for the fact that his handicap ■ was reduced for the remainder of the tourney from 7 to 4. M. Moore, the scratch player from Te Tahi (Wellington) equalled his morning round of 78, as iTSd O. H. Williams (Manawatu). George Tallin, the title-holder, improved upon his first card by a couple of etrokes. Though "Gus" Brinsden (1931 champion) was a stroke better in the afternoon he was not playing jyith an y confidence. The outstanding failure was W. O'Callaghan (Hawera), handicap 1, who could only qualify sixth in the Thermal Cup. The greens proved troublesome to many in the afternoon, and three putts was an oft-told story. _ The wind, too, freshened, this fact being evidenced by many of the players using a wood at the ninth hole, which in normal conditions is a No. 4 iron shot. The 64 players to qualify were:— CHAMPIONSHIP—32. H. B. Lusk (Auckland) 147 M. D. Carr (Rotorua) 152 T. Goudie (Titirangi) 152 A. B. Barnes-Graham (Hastings) .... 153 H. G. Davies (Napier) 154 S.
