IRAQ MASSACRE.

Disappointment at "Failure" Of League. SAFEGUARDS OF MINORITY. LONDON, August 17. The "Manchester Guardian," referring to the massacre in Iraq, says there are about 40,000 Assyrians, half of whom are homeless. The others are scattered about in villages in .the arid mountain area north of Mosul. The Assyrians were bitterly disappointed when Geneva failed to safeguard them as a community when Iraq was given her independence. The crux of the matter is that the Assyrians want assurances that they will be allowed to live together for their own protection and be ruled by their own archbishop.

On that being granted they will lay down their arms and swear loyalty to King Feisal. However, the Iraq Government demands their submission, whatever conditions the Government may impose.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Mac Donald, will arrive in London from Lossiemouth early this morning. He will consult Departmental heads and deal with certain State matters before returning to Scotland to resume his holiday at the end of the week.
