STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

SQUEEZED BACK. J. McLaughlin's three-year-old colt Epi- ' gram was probably unlucky not to beat ' Tea Garden in the hack mile at Riccar--1 ton on Saturday, as he got squeezed back " a few lengths by the crowding field at i about the six-furlong post. Epigram should -' not be long in getting on the winning list. | ALWAYS IN THE MONEY. ( Silvox lived up to his repuation for consistency by filling third place in the ■ Longbeach Handicap at Riccarton on Sat- , urday. He had three hard races las' l , week . and finished quite soundly, so his prospects | of training on now look bright. He has had five starts, and he has been in the money each time. A SON OF SPEAR DANCE. Ono of the most recent additions to the juvenile ranks at Ellerslie is a bay gelding by Spear Danco from Rehutai, by Lucullus from Aquatis. He is a neat-looking two-year-old and although he has only been taken up a short time he is fairly well developed and in nice order to commence a preparation for racing. RACED CREDITABLY. Callamart fell early in the Grand National Steeplechase, but he ran and jumped much better on the next two days, to finish second in both the Beaufort and Lincoln Steeplechases. He did not, however, look like beating either Lucess or Luna Lux. Callamart is not so much at home at Riccarton as at Auckland, or on some of the other North Island courses, where the going is heavy for steeplechases, but he carried big weights, and it was also his first experience of Riccarton country, and if he returns next year ho should be a better proposition for the National. YOUNGSTERS IN THE WAIKATO. Mr. S. Otway, of Pukckura, has a Lumber of nice youngsters running on his property (says our Cambridge correspondent). One of the best is a colt by Gay Shield from Lady Marie, by Romeo from Marie Odile. Lady Marie is the dam of Lady Valmario and Gay Sheila, while Marie Odile also produced Hukapapa. Another nice colt is by Gay Shield- from Nucleus, by Lucullus from Porsis, and therefore a three-quarter brother to Gay Seton, who was by Gay Shield from Persis. A well-developed filly is one by Gay Shield from Persis, and the others include a filly by Gay Shield from Hukapapa, and a filly by Sargon from Shebang. Among the brood mares are Lady Ruth, Lady Marie, Nucleus, Hukapapa, Hyades (dam of Amnion Ra), and Shebang. Of these all but Nucleus are in foal. Hyades is in foal to Chief Ruler and Persis is carrying her thirteenth foal.

LUCK CHANGED. The stable controlled by Mrs. J. Campbell at Riecarton had a favourable change of fortune when Thurina won the Grand National Steeplechase last week, but was certainly right out of luck during the remainder of the meeting. Thurina was run off a fence on the second day, and on the Saturday he made his only bad jump of the week, and although lie did not fall, he dislodged his rider. Gay Jim, when disputing the lead two fences from home in the hack steeplechase on Saturday, was run off by Speakeasy and lost what appeared to be an excellent chance of winning. Lady Valkyrie, also trained by Mrs. Campbell, crashed through the thircl fence in the Styx Hurdles. In regard to Thurina, his rider R. Beale suffered a severe fall from Huntley in the previous race, and it was feared he would not be well enough to ride Thurina, for whom he had been engaged. A. E. Ellis signified his willingness to take the mount if required, and got as far as putting the colours on, but later Beale said he felt quite able to ride, and in consequence was given the mount. There was no doubt that Beale had not recovered fully from the effects of his fall, and although he escaped injury when dislodged from Thurina, he was unable to give any idea as to how the mishap occurred. Thurina careered round the course before being caught, but except for a slight cut on one of his legs, suffered no serious effect. It is intended to send him to his owner's place at Doyleston, and he will not be raced again this year, but before leaving Riecarton he is to be given a schooling task over the country by A. Ei Ellis. -■:;

A JOCKEY INJURED. While exercising a two-year-old at Ellerslie this morning the rider, T. Williams, was thrown as the result of his mount slipping. He received a cut on the back of the head and also above one of his eyes which required medical attention. SOMEWHAT EXPENSIVE. Polydora was expensive to her admirers in the Heathcote Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. She was giving away a long start from the home turn, and, though she got, a run on the rails, she could not quite get into the money, while she never looked as if she would be a winner. In spite of her failure, however, she should repay for following in the spring. UNLUCKY AT MARTON. The Southern hunter Sir Glamis was unlucky at Marton last month, where he won the View Halloo Steeplechase, but was disqualified for missing the last fence. Ho is a good jumper, with plenty of pae'e, and is expected to show up at the EgmontWanganui Hunt meeting to-morrow. He is engaged in the Maiden Steeplechase and Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup, and will probably contest both events. TWO OF H. E. RUSSELL'S TEAM. The Woodville trainer 11. E. Russell (says our Woodville correspondent) has Gipsy Love and Tommy Atkins engaged at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt meeting at Wanganui to-morrow. Gipsy Love, who is by Hunting Song and was a fairly smart two-year-old last season, is well forward for early spring engagements. Tommy Atkins, who is a maiden, has shown a lot of speed, but is rather deficient in stamina. WORTH WATCHING. In. addition to Southdown, the winner, A. McAulay saddled up another three-year-old in the Longbeach Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. This was Haere Tonu, who runs in -the same colours as Nightmarch. Haere Tonu finished fourth, and he is worth watching for events in the future. He is by Hunting Song from Martianette, by Martian from Equitas, and is thus a half-brother to Martian Chief and a full relative to Hunting Lodge. CERTAIN TO DO BETTER. Southdown, the winner of the Longbeach Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, was purchased by the Dunedin owner, Mr. J. M. Samson, at the Sydney yearling sales last year. He won a race in the spring, and after two more runs he was put aside, being a big horse, who, looked as if he would require time. When Mr. Samson's horses were offered for sale at Easter, there was bididng for Southdown up to 90gs, but the sale was not completed and since then the colt has been trained for Mr; Samson at Riccarton by A. McAulay. This was his first run since the spring, and his performance was rather impressive. It remains to bo seen whether he will stay, but in the meantime he looks certain to go on winning in better company, at least up to a mile. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. WAGER— £53 13/.
