STATE FUNERAL.
Austrian Policeman Shot By Nazis. } _ GRAVESIDE SPEECH. ■ ("Times" Cables.) LONDON, August 11. The Vienna correspondent of "The Times" states that the late Michael Schwaninger, the Austrian auxiliary policeman, who was shot dead from an ambush when ho was patrolling the Austrian section of a street in the frontier town of Kufstein last Monday, was accorded a State funeral to-day. The body was escorted to the cemetery by nearly 2000 policemen and soldiers.
Dr. Steidle, leader of the ChristianSocial party in the Austrian Tyrol, speaking at "the graveside, declared that God had imposed the mark of Cain but the Nazis themselves had chosen to bear the brand of the swastika.
Special precautions included the arrest of many local Nazis and their detention for 24 hours.
Schweninger's death was the climax to' a series of anti-Austrian outrages and aggression which the police are convinced were instigated by responsible Nazis and encouraged by Bavaria:, which so far lias not officially expressed regret for the murder, or attempted to discover the perpetrators. It is believed in Vienna that the Bavarian police, who are always patrolling the region, could have arrested the assailants within 12 hours if they had wished to do so.
