BUS SERVICES.

TUAKAU AND HELENSVILLE. RESTRICTIONS SOUGHT. Further proposals for co-ordinating passenger bus services with the railway were made at the sitting of the No. 2 Licensing Authority yesterday afternoon. When an application was made for a renewal of a license by Loughrin and Mclvor between Tuakau and Auckland, Mr. G. T. Wilson, the railway representative, contended that the license should be for a feeder service only, linking with the rail at Papakura. The bus service was prohibited from picking up passengers from Bycroft's corner, near Drury, to Auckland, a distance of 24 miles in a total journey of 21 miles. Mr. Foster, for the applicant, said that a feeder service could not be a financial success.. Jf the restriction was imposed there would be a big area which would not have any service other than the train, which had proved unsatisfactory. The hearing was adjourned until Monday.

A reduction in tlic number of daily bus trips, from three to two, was sought by the Railway Department when the application for renewal of the license of Robinson's Motors, from Auckland to Helensville, was heard. Mr. A. M. Goulding, for the applicant, called evidence to show that the service was desired by the residents. In connection with a new scale of reduced fares, lie said that the public was looking for cheaper transport, and if the applicant could meet their wishes he should not be prohibited from doing so. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. asked the applicant if the object of reducing the fares was to obtain more passengers, and whether the profits made at present justified a reduction in the fares. Applicant replied that he thought reduced fares would bring him more business and offset the reduced fares. He denied that his object was to divert traffic from the railway. Decision was reserved.
