CALL TO THE PUBLIC.
WOMEN AND CHILDREN. PROTECTION SOCIETY'S WORK. An appeal for greater public assistance was made in the annual report read at the thirty-ninth general meeting last evening of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children. The president, Mr. A. J. Stratford, was in the chair. The chairman of the committee, the Eev. P. S. Smallfield, who read the report, emphasised the fact that the organisation was doing a Teat community work, inasmuch as it "dealt with a type of social welfare that the "man in blue" found outside his usual sphere. The report intimated that there had been 5122 office interviews during the year, an increase of 100 over those for the previous years. A total of 749 new cases were dealt with, and the inspector made 2055 visits to homes, an increase of 331. Regret was expressed that after every possible economy, including a reduction in the women officers' increments, the society was forced to make an invasion amounting to £185 of its small capital reserve, the interest on which was lost. The committee had sent delegates to wait on the municipal and various local bodies, resulting in a considerable revival of interest, with surprising financial benefit. Archdeacon H. F. Holbrook addressed the meeting on the subject of unemployment in its relation to social welfare Tha Rev. Father Colgan spoke in support. Mr. G.' C. Munns made an appeal for public support of sterilisation of the unfit. Mr. D. Donaldson and Mrsi Rewa Bennett also spoke, and an address on the society's activities was given by Mrs. Bates, the collector. The following officers were elected:— Patron, the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe; president, Mr. A. J. Stratford; vice-presidents, Rev. E. W. Patchett, Rev C A. B. Watson, Archdeacon H. F Holbrook, Rev. D. D. Scott, Rev P. S Smallfield, Rev. Father Colgan, Rev W Jellie, Rev. R. Stowards, Rev. A. V. Whiting, Rabbi S. A.
