MAYORAL INSTALLATION.
NEW LYNN CEREMONY. The installation of the Mayor of Xcw Lynn, Mr. (.'co. Lawson, and the swearing-in of councillors took place last evening. The Mayor was. installed by tho retiring deputy -Mayor, Mr. W. Platt, Mr, Lawson said the paet four yeare had been very strenuous. Costly public works had needed completion, and many difficulties had to be overcome. Those difficulties had been surmounted, and the borough was back again to a. position of general administration. During the paet term the Whan Bridge had been constructed and represented a line piece of work —much below the. estimated cost.
The Mayor isaid he was in favour of reducing the rates if at all possible, although it was doubtful -whether it could bo done, owing to the interest charges on the public debt. These amounted to £.'5840 per year, of which £4402 represented the charges on the sewerage eyetem. The council would be asked to consider the question of loans conversion. The public debt was £121,010.
The roads and footpathe of the borough had suffered somewhat through lack of revenue. On the other hand, many improvement worke had been carried out by the unemployed, and there was still much to do. He regretted that the council's, financial position was such that it was impossible to givo material assistance to these unfortunate men, for whom he had every sympathy.
