STUDENT MAGAZINE.
AUTHORITIES TAKE ACTION. OBJECTIONABLE ARTICLES. The action taken by the authorities of Canterbury College recently in connection with the publication of a magazine called "Oriflammo" by students calling themselves member* of the Caxton Club, is referred to at further length in the news columns of "The Christchiireh .Star." It is staled that the club was granted permission to install a printing press in the basement, below the law room, at the college, but e-ince' ttic first number of the journal appeared much adverse comment on the very doubtful tasto of some of the articles has been provoked. The result has been the withdrawal of permission to produce the journal at the college. It iri understood that the. position lies been given serious, consideration by tie college authorities, and probably tlie lust of the matter has not been heard officially. No mention of the publication, which the publishers stated would be "of spasmodic appearance," was made at the last meeting of the college Board of Governoys, but it may call for comment at the next meeting. "Canta,* , the official organ of the College 'Students , Association, contains a story dealing with the banishment of the young men concerned from the basement. To an emissary of "Canta" one of the principals of "Oriflamme," which in some quartern has earned the tide of "Hell's Telephone Book," stated that a letter had been received from the Board of Governors, expressing the view that "in the opinion of the board, permisison to use the basement has been abused by the publicatk i. which contains matter of an objectionable nature." The first, and, as yet only number of "Oriflamme' , was soon sold, out to students, and it is not known whether any further numbers will appear after the removal of tlio press to other premises.
College. authorities were reticent when approached and asked if anything further would be done. The rector (Dr. J. Hight) declared that action had been taken, and for any further information referred the reporter to the chairman of the Board of Governor,? (Mr. ('. T. Aschman). Mr. Asehimm declared that a<s yet. in the circumstances he could not possibly say anything for publication about any further action that might be taken.
