"That is only about half the amount we estimated we would require to equip t]io men on the same scale as last year," he said. "But since, wo prepared our budget the Unemployment Board has instituted a boot scheme, which will help our fund to a considerable extent, in that we will not have to provide tho same amount of footwear this winter. Last year the bulk of our money was expended in providing working boots for relief workers. His Excellency's Appeal.

"With the money in hand, and grants from future art unions, we, expect to bo in a position to make even better provision for the men than we did last year. In addition, the committee will participate in the proceeds coming from the appeal made by tho Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe. Tho allocation has not yet been made. In this connection 1 liavc been informed by Sir Cecil Day that it will be in conformity with His ICxeollcncy's plan that gifts of produce should be' forwarded to the relief depot in Hobson Street. From there the prodiU'Q will be forwarded to the meat depot in Karangahape Road for distribution."

The. allocution from the Easter Art Union was the result of an application made by the Mayor some months ago for a share in the proceeds of art unions for the Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee. Mi\ Hutchison was advised by the Under-Seeretary of Internal Affaire that £ 10,000 would lie available, out of the Easter Art Union for allocation for unemployment relief, and from that sum Auckland would receive its share.

In llic course of an interview, after lie had been to Wellington on unemployment relief business lato in April last, tlio Mayor said: "1 pointed out to the LJndor-Sccretary that the application was inndo on behalf of the four cities, and that if the. proceeds were to be spread over the whole Dominion our allocation would not bo sufficient for our purposes. His reply was that there was quite a. good prospect of further allocations being made, out of subsequent art unions in order to meet the position."
