OIL FROM SCOW.
SEAMAN ADMITS THEFT.
Arrested on Wednesday by the wharf police, Victor Roff, aged 35, a seaman, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing eight gallons of lubricating oil, valued at £2 4/, the property of Winst6ne, Ltd. % Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that at 10.40 last night a constable saw accused and a taxi-driver leaving one of Winstone's scows with a quantity of oil. Although at first Rolf denied the oil was stolen, he later admitted his guilt and that he had hired the taxi and persuaded the driver to assist him to get the oil. The taxi-driver was in no way to blame. "Roff has been employed on the scow for the past two years," said Mr. McHugh. "We know nothing else against him." Roff had nothing to say except that he was going to give the oil away. "That is not a very convincing explanation," said the magistrate in fining Roff £5, or one month's imprisonment.
