BOXING CONTESTS.
Preliminary Bouts.—Great Middle-weight Fight.
Although admission was free to the Town Hall this morning when "the boxing preliminaries were held, there was only a sparse attendance. The standard shown merited a full house. As each contestant entered the ring he was welcomed by; an enthusiastic war cry from his college. The middle-weight bout between J. Dovi, of Otago, and W. J. Brittenden of Canterbury, was a line exhibition—one of the best contests ever seen between university students-.in this class. The verdict went to Dovi after a scientific exposition of lighting and boxing by both men. Each bout consisted of four two-minute rounds, with onc-minute intervals. Results:—-Bantam'-welglit.—R. L. Cotton (Otago), 8.9, beat E. Malcolm (Auckland), 5.7. This was a clever light and close. Feather-weight.—C. C. Steele (Auckland), 9.2, beat L. F. Moller (Otago), 9.2. A nother clever exhibition was witnessed in this bout. Lightweight.—C. C. Wills (Canterbury), 9.7, beat H. It. C. Wild (Victoria College), 9.11. Middle-weight.—J. Dovi (Otago), 10.11, beat W. J. Brittenden (Canterbury), 10.5. A great fight and close finish which will go down in the annals as the best middleweight contest ever contested by student amateurs. G. K. Claris (Victoria), 10.11, beat J.- A. E. Mulgan (Auckland), 11.2. This was another good contest, the result being in doubt to the end. Light heavy-weight.—Keane (Otago), 11.0, beat W. L. Barker (Auckland), 11.12. So close was this contest that tiic referees ordered a fifth round before giving a decision. HEAVY-WEIGHT. .T. K. Benson (Otago, 11.32) beat E. A. Webb (Canterbury. 12.3). Benson earned the decision fur clean work. ,T. D. Collester (Auckland, 12.5) beat E. Blacker (Victoria, 1-3.0). An uninteresting bout at times. Collester used both hands to advantage.
