erners Doing Well.

The outstanding tennis attraction in Auckland to-day was the annual New Zealand University championships, which commenced at the Stanley Street courts this morning in fine weather. The courts were true and fast despite, recent showers. The keen interest and rivalry taken in the series of contests were reflected in an excellent attendance ot spectators. ~ , , The championships were held last jear at Christchurch, and on this occasion the series should have been played in edin, but Ot ago University conceded its right in recognition of Auckland University's jubilee, shortly to be celebrated. The tournament opened with the men s and ladies' singles, the former, with an absence of three-set matches, concluding the first round bv 10.30 a.m. The semi-finals in both of these sections were resumed this afternoon. Finals and completion of men's, ladies', and -mixed doubles will constitute- features of Tuesday's programme. Leading players representative ot Auckland, Wellington (Victoria College), Canterbury, and Otago Universities are participating. H. A. Barnptt, of Canterbury, twice runner-up for the New Zealand singles title, showed fine form in his opening, contest again G. D. Whitcombe. (V.U.C.y, winning .without difficulty. In the ladies' singles it is anticipated that a stern duel will be provided by Miss M. , Sherrin. (.C.U.C.) and Mies R. Taylor (Auckland). Results:— MEN'S SINGLES. 11. A. Barnett (C.U.C.) beat G. D.
