WELFARE ASSOCIATION.
MOUNT ROSKILL ACTIVITIES,
' At a well-attended meeting of the executive committee of. the Mount Roskill Welfare Association, there was discussion concerning the best means by which the needy could be assisted. After reviewing the work which had already been accomplished by the association, it was decided that for the time being it would be difficult to improve the system in operation. Reports from the sub-committees showed that all possible was being done for the unemployed and needy of the district. During the past month 140 articles have been distributed free, and free orders given for meat, groceries, vegetables and coal to necessitous cases. A large number of garments were sold for small amounts. Great work had been done by the boot depot. In seven months approximately 500 pairs of boots and shoes had been repaired at a charge just sufficient to pay for the materials used. Many people were availing themselves of the opportunity of buying new clothes, boots and shoes on the time-payment system, and with few exceptions purchasers were making every effort to liquidate their accounts. It was reported that the association had several schemes under way to raise money to meet demands for assistance during the winter.
