TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE

SEVERAL SMART EFFORTS,

GOLDEN WINGS AND LORDLY KNIGHT.

Although, rain fell overnight, the going afc Ellerslie this morning was good for the final gallops, and a number of fast sprints were recorded. The course proper, with the poles 35ft out, was in most demand, other tracks available being the No. 3 grass, tan, hurdles, and steeplechase course. The best efforts of the morning over sprint distances were those of Golden Wings, Paganelli, Lordly Ivnight, Chief Cook, Sea Ruler, and Princess Dpreen. Silver Scorn also registered a first-class gallop over a mile and a quarter.

The Course Proper. Muff was first to use the course proper, being sent over seven furlonj;ti with a good weight up. She ran the first three in 395, and the full distance in 1.32 1-5. Karangapai was holding Golden Spahi safely at the conclusion of five furlongs, which he covered in 1.5 3-5. Over a furlong further Ruling King recorded 1.20 2-5. Deputy Ruler was given an easy five furlongs, which he covered in 1.5 2-5, doing it very comfortably. Silver Scorn was worked over a mile and a quarter, and, going very freely throughout, finished up her task in 2.13 2-5. She ran the final round in 2.3 4-5 and the last seven furlongs in 1.32. This was a splendid effort. Court Haven was timed to run seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5 without being unduly bustled. There was little between Grand Spirit and Blanford over six furlongs, which occupied 1.19 4-5. Both horses were running on at the finish. Psychologist worked alone over a round, which he completed in 2.11 3-5. He was going nicely at the finish and could have done better.

The Easter Handicap candidates Lordly Knight, Chief Cook, and Manawhenua had Mahkill as a companion over seven furlongs. They ran the first three in 38 l-os, and completed the distance in 1.31. Lordly Knight and Chief Cook were on terms at the finish, with Manawhenua handy and Mahkill several lengths away. This was a first-class gallop, and Lordly Knight, whc>. was on the outside, did his work attractively, though Chief Cook, who had the worst of the weights, also impressed. Paganelli was timed to run five furlongs in 1.2, doing his work particularly well. His final half mile took 49 3-se. Tetrarchate followed Paganelli, taking 52 2-5s for his last four furlongs. The etablemates Marchette and Roman Mascot completed a seven-furlong task in 1.32 2-5. Both shaped nicely. Senegal and Carfex were worked over a mile, registering 1.43 2-5 for the journey. Both worked with plenty of dash and there was little between them -at the end. Master Brierly and Wee Pat got to the end of seven furlongs in 1.32. Kilmuir assisted them over the last five furlongs, but was not timed. Master Brierly impressed most. Miss Rewa ran home from the five-furlong post ih 1.6, Vandyke taking 1.7 1-5 for, a similar distance. The hurdler Zane Grey jumped off at the mile post, running the first four furlongs in 53 l-ss, and completed the gallop in 1.40 4-5. The two-year-olds Rapper, Impasto, and D'Artagnan went away from a straggling start at the six-furlong post, Impasto getting several lengths advantage, but was eased tip in the straight, and D'Artagnan was also steadied owing to his rider losing an iron. They ran the first three furlongs in 38 4-ss, and Rapper, who finished in front, took 1.19 for the full distance. My Money and Gay Broney, after running their first furlong in 13s, got to the end of half a mile in 51 3-5s —a useful effort. The Southern two-year-old Catalogue pleased better than Chief Joy over five furlongs. He ran the first two in 24 3-ss, and came home in 1.3 2-5. This juvenile moved very attractively but has had little racing experience. Aga Khan and Gold Trail were associated over seven furlongs. They ran the first half mile in 51 3-ss, and the full distance in 1.32 1-5. They did their work well and could have improved on the time. The Champagne Stakes candidate Princess Doreen had Inflation to assist her over six furlongs, and beat him home in 1.18 3-5. The two-year-old galloped brilliantly, and Inflation improved on his showing on Tuesday. Seatown was given strong work over a distance, 'but was not after -time, taking 1.7 for the last five furlongs. Sea Ruler, an Easter lightweight, put up a firstclass effort over five. furlongs, running the distance in 1.2. He was going particularly well at the finish. Sunny Sky, Lady Quex, and Merry Damon jumped off at the seven-furlong post, running their first half mile in 51 3-ss, and reached the post in 1.31 3-5. Sunny Sky, who was on the outer, worked well, and Lady Quex also gained friends by her good showing. After Breakfast. Golden Wings trotted round to the five-furlong post, and, getting away from a moving start, ran his first two furlongs in 25 l-ss,' and came home in 1.1 2-5. He was running on strongly at the finish. Kiltowyn was going better than United at the conclusion of five furlongs, run in 1.4 3-5. Over a similar distance Aiguille and Sir Val registered 1.3, the former going the better of the pair, though Sir Val shaped pleasingly. Aiguille is making good progress from his_ injury. The hurdler Ruby Dawn raifTiome from the six-furlong post in 1.20 2-5. Lucess and Solanio finished in front of Billy Boy, Nassock, and Absent at the end o£ a mile and a quarter, which took 2.20 1-5, the last round occupying 2.10 4-5 and the final seven furlongs 1.36 3-5. Nor val went away slowly from the six-furlong post and was timed to run his last five furlongs in 1.3. On the No. 3 grass Gold Money beat Supreme Ruler over half a mile in 51 4-ss. ■ On the Tan, Taneriri, Valroe, and Wee Prince completed a round in 1.59, doing it comfortably. Prince of Orange also did strong work on this track. Imamint ran half a mile in v s4s, and Notamint took 54 4-5s for a similar task. The Jumpers. Arch Eagle (Rennie) and Free Air (Preston) gave a first-class display over four hurdles, both horses jumping quickly and cleanly. General Lu (Olive) was sent over the steeplechase fences on the flat twice. He dwelt at most of them the first time but gave an improved display on the second. . Catoma (Chaplin) again had Glenotus to assist him in a school over four hurdles, giving a fair display. Callamart (Thomson), Simeon (Smith), Ruby Meteor (Miles), Arcade (Mcllroy), and Neil (Chaplin) set out over a round of the steeplechase course, and completed the journey safely. Arcade and Simeon had charge over the double at' the top of the hill, the former going to the front on the flat, but in attempting to run off at the second fence of the double lie dislodged his rider. Callamart and Simeon were in front at the finish, each giving a good display. Neil also jumped well. Ruby Meteor was pulled on to the course proper at the foot of the hill. Creina's' King (G. Carmont) was sent over the same fences. He did not have much pace on but gave a fair display. Day Lark (Thomson) jumped eight hurdles satisfactorily.
