THE OPENING EVENT.

A SMAXL FIELD.

©wing, to tlieio'oii'.y being four-paid up for in the.Great.Northern Oaks the club has decided that this event -will be the first race on Saturday instead of the second. The fieH -mil-probably be further reduced by the defection of Gold Trail, whom it is stated Trill run in the Easter Handicap. Silver Scorn has won eleven races, includ-' ing the New Zealand and Great Northern Derbies, in her twelve' starts, while she was second on .this other occasion. The bulk of the money will go on "" "... SILVER SCORN. The President's Handicap. A good field is engaged in the President'* Handicap. . Merry Damon, who. is top-; weight,; won well-oyer a. mile when.he; accounted for the., Plunket Handicap at; Ellerslie last December, and subsequently finished second in the Takapuna Cup, one mile, three furlongs and 40 yards, with 9.0, and second in the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, nine furlongs, with 9.4, while he. later won the. Tauranga Stakes, one mile and a' quarter,, at Gisb° rne with 9.12. Sea-, town won the Summer Handicap, one mile and. a quarter, at the/Wellington summer meeting, beating a strong field. Flying Prince accounted for the Franklin and Ohinemuri Cups recently and must be considered. Aga Elian was successful in the Prince of Wales Handicap, nine furlongs, at Manawatu recently, while Whakapara annexed the. Mclnnes Memorial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Whangarei. Alloy has shown good form over ten furlongs this season and he was a winner at his last start—Whangarei last Saturday. Jalldy Karo ran two good seconds at the same meeting, but seems to find a mile and a quarter a little beyond him. Carfex was narrowly beaten in the Stratford Cup recently by Chopin. This horse won two mile events at the Auckland spring meeting in November, and will have friends. Grand Talk and Chang look the best of the remainder. Those who may have most support are -. ■ CARFEX SEATOWN FLYING PRINCE The Brighton Hurdles. Prince of Orange has proved himself a good hurdler since he started jumping this season. He has' won four hurdle races, three of which were at Ellerslie, including the Grafton and the Auckland Hurdle Races, both two-mile events, at the Auckland summer meeting: He has a big weight, but all the same should race prominently. Cruachan won at Te Aroha and also at Te Rapa, and is an improving sort'. Paddon was a. good performer last winter, winning, among other races, the Trentham and Winter Hurdles at Wellington. A repetition of that form would make him very dangerous.. Royal Visitor won two steeplechase events at the Grand Nationalmeeting and accounted for the Manukau Hurdles, two miles, at Ellerslie last November. Billy Boy also performed well over country last season. Emancipation is an improving jumper, who finished .second to Cruachan at Te Aroha and the next day - won - over a mile and threenuarters. He is a likely sort. Free Air, Lucess and Imperial Prince appeal most of the remainder. - Those who may be best backed are PRINCE OF ORANGE CRUACHAN : ■ EMANCIPATION. The Big Handicap. The scratching of Refresher and Aga Khan leaves seventeen to contest the Easter Handicap, the chief event of the dav, and the race bears a very open appearance. Golden Wings has 9.9,: but both Nonette and Reremoa'na carried 9.11 when they won, so that Golden Wings is not set an impossible task. He won the Nofth Island Challenge Stakes, seven furlongs, brilliantly in record time at the last Wellington meeting, and since then was successful in the Manawatu Stakes,, six furlongs. He should be. in the picture. Paganelli has been racing well recently, winning up to a mile and a quarter. He appears to be right back to his best form, but usually races best on left-hand courses. Lady Quex was second last year, but has done little since then. Sunny Sky has Previously performed well at Ellerslie and ran third in this race last year with 7.1. She has' been working well, and is a very fit mare. Manawhenua disappointed at Whangarei, but has been galloping well since, and. if the course is at all on the soft side lie will have to be reckoned with. Gold Trail, it is stated, will contest this race in preference to the Oaks, and as she has previously won over a mile at Ellerslie she ' -ill not be neglected. Inflation was second in the North Island Challenge Stakes, and "n that form he must have a show. Eager J»ose is about at her best r>nd lias rireviru'sly won over a mile at Ellerslie. If the '-"ing is firm she is sure to- run well. T.'Allegro performed well at the Auckland p'immei meetinsr. b?ating Silver Scorn in I he Christmas Handicap, one mile, while ]•". was second to Merry Damon over a <-imilar distance and spcond to Tea Trader ?"•> « sprint race. He always races well and —ill have plentv of friends. Lordly T "nigbt has good form recentlv. and piiloped well this morninf. Of the rthers Chief Cook and- Sea .Ruler •vo the most likely. Aiguille received s'iiiiries on bis trip nr> from Gisborne, which have interrupted bis preparation, ;nd be can hardly be nt his Vst for such r'ti important event. Those that may be in demand are RTTNTNTV SKV J:(TRT>t,V KNIGHT GOLDEN WINGS. The Two-year-old Classic. Of the half dozen .engaged in the Great . Northern Champagne Stakes Princess Doreen stands out so far as performances are concerned. In her last effort she was second in a seven-furlong race —the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes—so that there'

is no doubt about her seeing out the distance. DArtagnan has been successful on a couple of occasions this season and gives the impression that he will stay on. Deputy Ruler, who has also winning form to his credit, has got through a sound preparation and. i 6 sure to run a _ solid _ race. Impasto's recent form has been a bit disappointing, though there is no doubt he is very .speedy. The favourites may. be PRINCESS DOREEN DEPUTY RULER v . . ... DARTAGNAN. The Jumpers. •Royal Reign, .who is at the top of the Mangere Steeplechase fi.eld, performed well at the recent Ohinemuri meeting, winning on the' first day and- running second the next day. She should again go well. Callamart has raced over hurdles recently, but it will be recollected that he finished second in the Great Northern Steegjechase last June. Therefore' he knows the. country and should be in the picture. Claremore has not raced for some time, but schooled i >vell last week. at Ellerslie. Nassock and Neil finished first and third respectively in this, event' last season. Creina's King won over three miles at Pae'roa anil is a likely improver. Solanio won over hurdles at Whangarei, and as he is such a good jumper he will have to be considered. Of the others Simeon, Absent and Arcade read best. A trio that may be fancied are CALLAMART ROYAL REIGN „ : SOLANIO. .. The Onslow Stakes. A dozen are carded for the Onslow Stakes, a two-year-old event. Recent winners include Rapper, Gold Pocket, Cherry King, My Money, while Queen Nona has been in the money on several occasions. Coronis and Star Artist both showed promising form early in the season and may show up. King Mestor, who won a double at Thames, was sore after working on Wednesday, but if he goes to the post he should be hard to beat. In the absence of King Mestor the favourites may be GOLD POCKET RAPPER . CHERRY KING. The Concluding Event. i The programme will conclude with the. Eden Handicap, a mile hack event, for which the biggest field of the day is carded.. Master Brierly won the Grey Handicap, one mile, at the Auckland summer meeting, but will find it hard to concede weight to some of those lower down. Mulf has shown useful form in the south and is a likely sort. Senegal beat a good field in a mile hack at Trentham and-has been | placed on several other occasions. R. Reed will ride him and he is sure to go well. Desert Star displayed good form on the country circuit, winning over seven furlongs at Te Aroha and beating Chang over a mile at Waikato. Blanford, •Holly Lu and Ruri also have form to their credit and aire sure to get support, as also will Currajong. Tatyoon won attractively at Whangarei, and would only need to leave correctly to have a good chance. Of the remainder Mahkill, Kiltowyn, Wee Pat and Racefield appeal most. Some that may be well supported are SENEGAL DESERT STAR. TATYOON. The programme is as follows:— "1 "I OO GREAT NORTHERN OAKS of -L-L.OZ/ 5008OVS. For three-year-old fillies. One mile and a half.
