, "VVlien asked why he assaulted his wife in such a brutal mariner, the accused said that he wanted to go to gaol," said Detective-Sergeant MoHugli in the Police Court this morning, when Aka Te Pau (24), a Rarotongan, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Minnie Aka Te Pau on April 8.

Detective-Sergeant McHugh said accused lived with his wife in Grey Avenue. On April 8 the police received complaints from neighbours, and on going to Te Pau's house they found that accused had assaulted his wife. Her lip had been split, and he had pulled her about by the hair. Accused's wife was now quite recovered. Nothing was previously known against Te Pau. Mr. W. K. McKean, S.M.: What did\ you want to go to gaol for? Accused: I don't know. In answer to a question by the magistrate, Mr. McHugli said accused was a relief worker and supported his wife. Mr. McKean (to accused) : Have you been to gaol before?— No. Do you want to go there now? —No. "Well, let us hope that that your few days on Temand tip there will be the last. If you had not supported your wife I would have sent you to prison."

To Pau was convicted and ordered to come up for .sentence within six months and advised to behave himself in future.
