CRICKET.

SENIOR B GRADE.

SHORE AGAIN CHAMPIONS,

The final struggle for the championship of the senior B competition terminated last-Saturday, when North Shore, by dismissing Parnell for 148 runs, succeeded in retaining the premiership. The game started nearly a month ago and was allotted three afternoons. It was just as well that the 'extra time was included, owing to the fact that sufficient progress had not been made at the end of the second day. Further delay was occasioned by postponement on account of the Test match.

It will be remembered that North Shore won the toss and took the advantage of Batting on an easy wicket. No risks were taken and they wound up with 177 runs for one wicket—quite an excellent start. However, next day they were all out' for another 130 odd runs. Still 305 was a very substantial score for such an occasion, and a big proposition for Parnell to face under the circumstances.

Truth to tell, Parnell did not fare any better than North Shore on the day, and they only managed to reply with 58 for three wickets. It was too early to give up all hopes, although play was to be suspended for a fortnight, which meant that the weather would have to be taken into consideration. <

For the last stage of the contest conditions were good, so it rested with the remainder of the batsmen to ge£ the runs. However, the Shore bowlers took a hand and Parnell failed to obtain half the runs.

North Shore enjoyed all the advantage on the first day, and that probably contributed in no small measure to their success, but in later happenings Parnell did not reveal any better qualities than their victorious opponents. '

Although Parnell faced the last scene with determination, their slender hope was somewhat shattered when T. Smith bowled Gillies (41) with a shooter, after he had added ten runs. Burt (19), in an attractive display, appeared well set when he hit all over a ball from Blanchfield, which upset the bails. Clapham (18) made merry and collected- a couple of fours. Simmers (12) notched two fours before returning a hot one to Blanchfield. The remaining batsmen failed badly and the innings closed for 148 runs, leaving North Shore winners by 157 runs and the season's champions.

Even allowing for a couple of destructive eliootere, T. Smith bowled very well, and off 23 overs, including half a dozen maidens, he claimed five wickets for 41 runs. Blanchfield's slows realised three wickets for 19 runs off five overs, his one maiden being the best over sent down. Walters (two for 27) was unfortunate in having H. Smith drop an easy chance from Gillies. -W. Matthews sent down 12 overs of excellent length, but failed to get a wicket. .North Shore's fielding was good throughout and Parnell deserved every run made. SENIOR B V. OTAHUHU.
