LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

BOARD OF CONTROL.

SENIOR SEASON OPENS APRIL 29.

APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES,

The Auckland Rugby League's senior competition will commence on the 29th iust. At the first meeting of the Control Board last evening, under the chairmanship of Mr. G. Grey Campbell, a suggestion to defer the opening until the first Saturday in May was strongly opposed. Nominations were received from Marist Old Boys, Ponsonby United, Newton Rangers, Devonport United, City Rovers and Richmond Rovers. The draw was held over for a week.

The Auckland Referees' Association advised its selection of Mr. G. McCowatt as its representative on the referees appointments board, and Mr. A. Sanders, who previously acted, was nominated as the third member of the board representing the League and association. The following chief committees were set up;— Finance: Messrs. J. W. Probert and W Mincham. Insurance: Messrs. K. Doble, D. Wilkie and L. Binns. Ground: Messrs. J. Rukutai, L. Binns and 1. Culpan (convener). Emergency: Messrs Rukutai, Probert, G. Grey Campbell and I. Culpan. The chairman, secretary and treasurer (Mr. F. Ellis) are members of committees, ex-officio. The chairman reported having looked into the finances of) the League, and he. recommended thatrthe matter be referred to the finance committee for a report. From a survey of the figures, said Mr. Grey Campbell, it appeared that the finances had been well controlled. Matters for further consideration involved gate percentages to clubs. Personally, he was in favour of retention of this concession, although a reduction • might be discussed. He agreed with a 'suggestion by. Mr. Rukutai that the club delegates should have an opportunity also of discussing the question and bedome fully apprised with the financial position. He hoped to receive any suggestions about possible economies.

The question of a policy for admitting the unemployed during the season also will occupy this committee.

Arising from a club suggestion it was decided that reserve seniors would be played before their top teams wherever practicable. The transfer of F. Martin of Mount Albert United to Newton Rangers as a senior, a clearance having been granted, was approved.

Ponsonby Club advised having uplifted the suspension of' the following reserve senior players:—T. Scherer, E. V. Friend, Hedley White and J. Davis. The clubs action was confirmed.

The draw for practice matches on Saturday resulted: —No. 1 ground, 2 p.m., Ponsonby; 3.30 p.m., Newton; No. 2 ground, 2 p.m., Marist Old Boys; 3.30 p.m., City Rovers.
