FIRE IN MINE.
Five Lives Lost in Rand Tragedy. GALLANT NATIVE RESCUER, CAPETOWN, April 9. Five lives were lost in a fife 4000 feet below the surface in the Langlaagte mine. The victims were gassed. The fire has not been located yet. Rescuers from all the mines in the Band volunteered their assistance. No shift was on duty when the fire broke out. The underground manager, accompanied by officials—only three of them equipped with gas masks— descended the shaft to investigate. The manager led a second party of investigators. Rescuers worked desperately. One native heroically rescued two Europeans who had collapsed. The underground manager and four others are dead. The manager and the rest of the party are in hospital and all are improving.
