QUESTION OF LICENSING
CHRISTCHURCH DISCUSSION.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The exporters' committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce in a report to the council stated that "although maintaining its opposition to the principle of Government interference in business the committee is of opinion that the licensing of dairy factories appears to be desirable in the interests of the producer in order to prevent duplication of factories and plant and the_ continual building up of heavy capital expenditure and costs which must ultimately be carried by the producer." The clause led to a keen debate.
The adoption of the report was moved by Mr. L. G. K. Steven.
Mr. A. F. Wright said the clause was a complete reversion of what the chamber had long fought for in respect of the principle of Government in business. The whole thing was illogical. "I think wo will have to make up our minds soon whether we arc to have an entirely socialised State with an individual sitting in Government office deciding these things without any reference at all to the people," said Mr. W. Machin.
Mr. Wright moved that the clause be deleted and that the chamber protest emphatically against the regulations. Eventually it was decided to delete the clause from the report.
