TRADE TREATY.

AUSTRALIA-N.Z.

MR. COATES WELL SATISFIED.

SPECIAL SESSION UNLIKELY.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, Friday.

In an interview to-day concerning the trade treaty with Australia, the Minister of Customs, Mr. Coates, expressed entire satisfaction with the manner in which tf»/# negotiations had heen carried out. % had not been possible for him to acquaint his colleagues in the Cabinet with all that had been done, but he would do so at an early date. The terms of the treaty would be announced in Australia and New Zealand simultaneously.

In reply to a question whether the Government would consider calling the New Zealand Parliament together specially to deal with the matter, Mr. Coates said such a course was unlikely. He did not think it would be wise to ask Parliament to meet before the time already stipulated.

Mr. Coates said naturally there had been differences of opinion during the negotiations, but generally the work had been carried out in a satisfactory manner, and he thought that when the terms were announced it would be found the agreement was largely acceptable to both sides. Every endeavour had been made to reach an understanding on the points at issue.

It is understood agreement was reached on practically all the main points, although it is likely one or two matters will be the subject of further negotiation between the two countries. It will bo possible to carry out these without direct contact. REMOVAL OF EMBARGOES. NEW ZEALAND POTATOES. MELBOURNE, April 7. Advices received in Melbourne indicate that the new trade treaty between Australia and New Zealand involves the removal of restrictions and embargoes here on some New Zealand products, the chief of which are potatoes. In return Australia is to have a New Zealand market for her dried and canned fruits, and certain fresh fruits.
