SWIMMING.
NEW SOUTH WELSHMEN SAIL,
An enthusiastic little group of swimmers assembled at the wharf yesterday to farewell Owen and Frank Victor Besomo and Carl Phillips, who sailed by the Monowai for Sydney. The New South Welshmen had been in Auckland for nearly five weeks, and in a quiet, modest way did a great deal to foster swimming in the primary schools and in the province. There was a particularly happy parting between Noel Crump and Carl Phillips, whose five contests (which they wound up all square, two victories apiece and a dead-heat), aroused such remarkable enthusiasm. Carl, looking ill after his attack of influenza, was nevertheless bright and cheery, and maintained to the end the same joyful spirit which had made him the favourite of the party with the Auckland crowds.
Mr. R. M. Sheffield (Mount Eden), chairman of the combined clubs responsible for the tour, was there to bid Owen and his comrades au revoir, as were also Messrs. D. P. J. Langley, J. R. Miller and W. Elwarth, the North Shore members of the executive.
Cheers were exchanged as the liner went_ astern, thus terminating another sporting occasion full of pleasant memories.
During the four carnivals at which the Australians appeared at the Tepid Baths, the combined clubs had throughout a solid band of workers, the carnival officers being:—Committee, Messrs. R. M. Sheffield (chairman), D. P. J. Langley, W. Elwarth, D. Heron, J. R. Miller (treasurer), H. Moore (secretary);, carnival controller, Mr. D. J. F. Langley; swimming judges, Messrs. A. MacGregor, A. Sidford, Eric Nelson; call and costume stewards, Messrs. W. Elwarth, E. Sawtell, L. Cordes, Mrs. E. Johnston, Misses E. Tilsley, G. Hodgson; rope stewards, Messrs. E. C. Nelson, F. Mamage; false rope stewards, Messrs. G. Cameron, A. Dalton; entry stewards, Messrs. L. Beck, A. Spraggdn: door stewards, Messrs. D. Herron, E. Turpin, A. E. Trevarthen, R. Freeland; result board steward, Mr. A. Borrie; ticket salesmen, Messrs. G. Foy, M. Linwood, H. Cordes; runners, Messrs. M. Orr, A. Hodgson. SHORE CARNIVAL TUESDAY. The North Shore Amateur Swimming Club will hold its final carnival of the season at the Tepid Baths next Tuesday evening, when a varied and attractive programme of events will be decided. The main features will be the 666 2-3 yards inter-club relay championship of 20 swimmers a side, and the 133 1-3 yards tennis clubs' men's and ladies' relay championships. Several more than usually interesting novelty events are scheduled, including a challenge (relay) to the five Shanahan brothers by another "family" of swimmers.
